Statutory Interpretation: What on Earth Does it Mean?

The UWA Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that former High Court Justice, The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, will be giving a special lecture on statutory interpretation on Monday, 27 February 2012 from 9:00am to 9:45am.

The area of statutory interpretation is of particular interest to The Hon. Michael Kirby and he has written several articles on the topic, including his recent article ‘Statutory Interpretation: The Meaning of Meaning’ (2011) 35 University of Melbourne Law Review 113.

The lecture will provide Mr Kirby’s insights, and perspectives into the interpretation of legislation by reference to High Court cases. The lecture also marks the commencement of the new unit ‘Legislation in Practice’, which will be offered for the first time in 2012, at the Faculty of Law.

The Hon Michael Kirby AC

The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG served as a High Court judge for thirteen years and has twice been Acting Chief Justice of Australia.

He has been active on various international bodies and has served as President of the International Commission of Jurists, Geneva (1995-8); as a member of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Judicial Reference Group (2007-), and as a member of the UNAIDS Reference Group on HIV and Human Rights (2004-).

He is currently a member of the Eminent Persons Group, a panel tasked with investigating options to reform the Commonwealth of Nations. In 2010, Michael Kirby was awarded the Gruber Justice Prize.
