Been admitted to legal practice in another country?
Your first point of contact is the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia. As the admitting authority for the practice of law in Western Australia, they will assess your qualifications and advise how many law subjects you need to complete for admission to the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
Please note: At UWA most of the subjects will be taught in two parts over the whole year (eg Administrative Law I and II) and constitute two UWA units (12 points) The subjects are included in our graduate LLB pathway. The unit outlines give detailed information about lectures, assessment and other requirements.
48 points or more (8 UWA units) – Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (20350)
This course consists of units to a value of at least 48 points. The Legal Practice Board assessment will tell you which core units you need to complete. If less than the minimum 48 points required for the course you may enrol in units to make up the remaining number of points from either Table 7.2.2b (Bachelor of Laws Options) or Table 7.6.2a (Master of Laws Options). On completion of the course you will receive a formal qualification.
To apply, download the Law Postgraduate Application Form. Fees apply for each unit and may be paid up front or deferred through the FEE-HELP Loan Scheme.
Less than 48 points
Enrol to study only the required subjects through UWA ACCESS as a Continuing Education Student – Assessed. This category is for students who wish to attend lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions and undertake final assessments. You will be issued with a student number and a UWA Campus Card. This enrolment also includes full UWA library access and you may apply for formal academic records. Fees apply for each unit and are payable up front. You will not receive a formal qualification.
FEE-HELP is available. There are limitations in that the study must not lead to a higher education award, or exceed the equivalent of one year of full-time study.
Haven’t been admitted to legal practice in another country?
You will need to complete the equivalent of an Australian LLB.
Depending on your qualifications, we might give you credit (Advanced Standing) for units/subjects that you have already completed. We will determine what we will credit once you have accepted an offer.
NB: At UWA some subjects are taught in two parts (eg, Administrative Law I and II) and therefore constitute two UWA subjects. These subjects take one year to complete. Please see course pathways for these subjects.
