This postgraduate diploma gives graduates a good grasp of energy law, both in Australia and internationally, and the expertise to pursue careers in the important and expanding energy industry.

All units in this course are run on an intensive basis. Coverage of the general principles of oil and gas law, together with the legislation and agreements relevant to commercialisation and infrastructure, are supplemented by case studies based on real-life situations.

Presenters include John Chandler, Professor Richard Bartlett, Associate Professor Alex Gardner and David Hodgkinson, and guest presenters drawn from the energy industry and leading professional firms.

Course outline

The course consists of four coursework units (24 points) and articulates with the Master of Commercial and Resources Law.

All units in this course are run on an intensive basis and most are also taught through workshops that are available to professionals not seeking a post-graduate qualification. See Non-Standard Teaching Periods for dates.

Unit availability

Units listed in the course rules are not necessarily available every year. It is advisable to check the availability of units before accepting or applying to defer an offer from the University. The list of available options is updated in November each year.

Enrol early in resource law units such as Mining Law, Oil and Gas Agreements, Australian Oil and Gas Law and International Oil and Gas Law as these are sought after and places may be limited

Admission requirements

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Energy Law requires ONE of the following:

  • a bachelor's degree in law from this University, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty OR
  • qualifications and experience in a relevant field of petroleum exploration or production, mining, engineering or commerce which the Faculty recognises as equivalent to a bachelor's degree in law from this university OR
  • a level of education and duration and level of professional experience considered by the Faculty to be sufficient to permit satisfactory completion of the course.

English language competence

All UWA coursework and research programs require English Language Competence. Law requires an overall IELTS of 7.5, with a minimum score of 7.5 for reading and writing and a minimum of 7.0 for speaking and listening.
