WA needs water resources law reform

“Western Australia and the Northern Territory have yet to enact NWI-consistent water management legislation.  Water users in those jurisdictions do not benefit from the clear and secure NWI-consistent water access entitlements and statutory planning processes.”
- National Water Commission, “The National Water Initiative – securing Australia’s water future: 2011 assessment”, September 2011, p.9.

The Western Australian Government broadly supports the implementation of the National Water Initiative, which WA signed onto in 2006 and which remains the generally accepted blueprint for national water policy.  Why has the State been slow to enact legislation to implement these reforms? With rapid resources development and growing pressures on sources of urban water supply, this conference will test the argument that Western Australia needs water resources law reform.

The Minister for Water, WA, the Hon Bill Marmion, MLA, will open the conference and Professor Robert Glennon, University of Arizona and 2012 Distinguished Lecturer with the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, will give the key note address.
