Julia Powles has been awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to undertake a Bachelor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford commencing in September 2008. Julia was educated at John XXIII College before entering the University of Western Australia where she completed a BSc (Hons, Australian National University) and LLB (Hons) in 2006.
At Oxford, Julia plans to focus on intellectual property law and public law. She aims to contribute to Australian law and policy regarding issues at the intersection between science and law and the challenges of administrative justice in the face of increasing commercialisation and privatisation of government services.
While at university, Julia was involved in a range of clubs and associations. She was particularly involved in the UWA Hockey Club, UWA Outdoor Club and the Western Australian Flying Disc Association. She was a founding member of the UWA Progressive Law Students Association and was actively involved in the UWA Rotaract Club and UWA Law School Community Support.
Since graduating from UWA, Julia has worked as the Associate to the Hon. Justice Downes AM, President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. She has also worked in technology and intellectual property law at the Sydney office of Minter Ellison and has taught the undergraduate subject Administrative Law at the University of New South Wales

Elizabeth Shaw - Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations 2008
 It has been announced that Elizabeth Shaw, UWA law student and former Blackstone Student Society President (2006) is the Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations 2008. The Youth Representative advocates for Australian youth and takes their concerns to the UN in New York. This involves travelling to each Australian state and territory to meet with young people, politicians, youth organisations and various levels of government to identify relevant issues.
In late August, Beth will head to Europe for meetings of the European Youth Representatives. From September to December she will be working at the UN in New York as a fully accredited member of the Australian delegation to the UN. In this role Beth will address the General Assembly on behalf of Australia and work with the Third Commitee of the General Assembly (Social, Humanitarian, Cultural).
