The Blackstone Society is the Law Student's Society at UWA and provides educational, social and careers-related initiatives and activities with the aim of enriching the degrees of UWA Law students.
Students studying Law at UWA not only have the privilege of studying with some of the brightest undergraduates in the country and being taught by some of the world's foremost experts in their field, but they also have the great privilege of being represented by the best student society on campus.
The Blackstone Society takes an active role in representing students on various School, Faculty and University committees.
Professor Alan Robson, Vice Chancellor, once said "if students leave UWA armed only with a degree, but without having been fully involved in campus life, we have failed in our duty." (UWANews, 4 April 2005.) Involvement with Blackstone goes a long way to ensuring that you get the most out of your University education. It does this through:
The Society's functions are largely carried out by a student-elected committee of 25 members. Additionally, there are a number of portfolio holders that edit the publications produced by Blackstone, and organise the competitions run by the Society. Finally, various sub-committees have been formed as a way to involve more students in the running of their student society.
All students enrolled in a course within the Faculty of Law have automatic membership to the Blackstone Society, but to fully appreciate the wonders of Blackstone - for example to gain discounted tickets on all events - you need to pay a small membership fee.
For more information about Blackstone's events and initiatives, visit the Society website or get in touch with a member of the Committee either in person at the Blackstone Office in the common room (office hours are usually 12-2pm) or by email or phone (contact details on the website).
